Does anyone know of a family oriented trip around new years? Years ago the dive trips we joined were a blast for the adult traveler/diver. Now that our daughter (14) is newly certfied we are looking for a trip that is a little less "party" oriented than our previous experiences. If we could find other familes with diving kids that would be great. We prefer US or Mexico as we don't have much timefor international travel. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

That's a tough week to travel because:

#1. For many spots its "the" busy week of the year. The keys for example

#2. Its also the most expensive week to travel. Look at lots of sites - they mark up Christmas.

I would say that it all depends on what your goals are. Do you want to be around a lot of kids your daughters age? Do you just care about diving? No nightlife? Some nightlife? Activities for kids? For what it's worth - my wife and I just took our three kids (teenagers) to Cozumel. It's a relatively cheap and easy trip. It's ultra-safe. We sent them into town two or three times on their own (even at night) and had no worries. We wanted them to experience a different culture - food, clothes, way of life, etc. Oh, and the diving is OK, too. BUT, there are not a lot of teens or teen related activities. At least not the kind they are used to here in the states. That was ok with us, as my two boys were mainly interested in the diving, and my wife and daughter were mainly interested in laying in the sun. Perfect! It was a great trip, and the kids really, really enjoyed it. In fact, they are already talking about going back. Now, to get to that trip report . . .

For an even more laid back area (but daughter might be bored) with "easier" diving (less current, less crowded with boats), you might want to look at Akumal. It is about an hour south of Cancun. There are many threads here on the board that talk about both Cozumel and Akumal.
