First, pardon my ignorance, but I will be heading to Philly in October for a business meeeting and was wondering if there was any nearby diving. Recommendations appreciated. Thanks.

Ignorance is pardoned. Is much diving in southern NJ in October. You will look here (Look for "schedules."):

Wow...thanks. Didn't really know how close Philly was to the coast. I assume these are dry suit dives, which is not a problem other than dealing with the airlines.

There's some interesting quarry diving in Bethlehem (Dutch Springs) and Willow Springs, but they're a trip from Philly. Depending on when in the fall you're headed to Jersey, they might not be drysuit dives. I've been swimming in the ocean in early October and the surface temps have been near 70, Gulf Stream and all...

Trip is actually from 10/25 - 10/30. My guess is even if the water temp is reasonable, the air temp won't be.

Water temps @ 70 ft -- 49F yesterday. Dive DRY! You can rent a dry suit from many of the shops as well. From Philly, Atlantic City is a straight 50 mile run down the AC Expressway. Check out the East Coast Diving link above - I know they use the Atlantus out of Gardners Basin in AC. plus a couple other boats north and south of AC. Not sure of their schedule, I'm sure they have it on site.
Make sure you have proper equip for NE diving. Pony bottle required, consider doubles for deeper dives, cold water regs, etc.
