Planning a trip to Fakarava fro 7 nights in early July. From what I read on the various threads here, the best people to dive with are the FDC with Serge (as we don';t speak French). I do want to dive both passes if possible but I undrestand the best bet for us it to stay near the North and hope that Serge will have a trip south at some point. Any advice on accommodation please??? I've narrowed it down to Pension Kiria, Havaiki Pearl and Veke Veke. Has anybody stayed in any of them? Are they all near enough to FDC? Which is the prettiest setting/.beach and and nicest hot water bungalows???? Help please!

Sorry, I haven't stayed in those. I stayed at the Tokerau both times I was there. It is about a 5 minute walk south of the Hotel Maitai. FDC is north of the Maitai, not sure how far. The Tokerau bungalows are fairly new and clean, the food is quite decent, and the owners, Flora and her daughter Gahina, are very nice and hospitable. You can have Serge book it for you. Serge may be able to pick you up off of the Maitai dock.

There is no AC in any of the pensions (that I know of). That means having to sleep with windows and doors open (I went in January and April - maybe July is different). What I'm getting at is that I would recommend bringing a mosquito net. To hang it, run a strand or two of dental floss from window to window.

In March 2008 I did a live-aboard at Fakarava. Because the catamaran wasn't in time, we had to spend the first night at a basic resort exactly at the south pass. There we did our first amazing dives. The next morning the Aquatiki arrived and we made a cruise to Kauahi and Toau. We ended at the north pass of Fakarava. The diving is so great! I've never seen so many grey reef sharks, everywhere you looked above, beneath, left, right.. We felt like being in a National Geographic documentary.
Enjoy your time in French Polynesia!!!
