Hi Everyone,

Just a quick summary after some outstanding time spent diving in Polynesia.

- Bora bora diving is good, Mantas are back in the lagoon (maybe because hotels are empty at >1000$/night...)
- Tuamotus islands are MUCH better.
- Tikehau is very good. dive club (Raie Manta) is worth it. Small, but friendly and professional. Nice crew and you feel well taken care off, CMAS card or not.

- Fakarava is the best (probably better than Ranguiroa, while i need to go back there to make sure).
Whether the north pass (reef path), VERY large, or the south one (Tumakohua), the diving is really outstanding (US people would say Awesome, and British may say so as well :rofl3:...)
You actually see school of sharks (by hundreds) very easily. Visibility is like infinite. When they complain about it, it means you are getting ~200ft.
This is really a top spot !

Now, if you are not french, and if you don't own your nice FFESSM/CMAS level2 card, you'd better be very careful selecting your dive club.
I only tried 2 out of the 3 down there in Fakarava, but I can easily recommend to avoid Teavanui.
This clubs sucks bad. Divemasters are reaching a level of arrogance I've never found anywhere else (Europe, Carribbeans, and in the other Polynesian Islands). And I was told it is not just being unlucky. The tone is set by the director who's been there for a while.
They pack the boats like crazy, don't pay attention to customers, talk and handle you like you are getting your first pool dive, etc. List of complaints would be very long, including some safety margin as well, while main problem is arrogance.

I can't comment about TopDive, the second club, but I may suspect is follow the same path, as it is large, and needs to maximize business and follow the motto: "who cares, customers are always happy with what they'll see, and they'll come back so no choice for them..."

But there is a choice ! You have a very small club own by Serge and Carine:
club

It's only the 2 of them, so seats are limited. But:
- Very pro attitude from the beginning to the end
- They take good care of you (including take your equipment to the boat and back).
- You see real customer intimacy. Goal is to have fun and please any divers expectations. Very accommodating based on what you want to do and your level.
- Boat is faster and has a little bimini !
- While not a big deal, (depends for whom), Serge dives with BP/W ;)
- And a lot of other very good things and positive feedback for Serge and Carine

Maybe just a coincidence, they are from Switzerland, and not France...

Only issue with Serge and his Fakarava diving center is that I'm not the only one who has noticed he's much better than the others, so it is difficult to get a spot as he seems often booked. It is very easy to understand, and I would absolutely recommend this club over others for any divers, experimented or not.

Hmmm . . . I wonder if this Serge is the same fellow who was working for TopDive in Rangiroa when we were there? If so, I can imagine he's running a wonderful operation. He was a big part of how much fun we had with our Rangiroa dives -- his enjoyment of what he could share with us was so evident, you couldn't help but share it.

I'm not sure he was, as it seems he spend quite a lot of time in Fakarava.
As you pointed out, the guy you ended up with, whatever the club, can make a huge difference with the dive experience when you dive abroad.

In Ranguiroa, and it was 4 years ago, I dove with the 6passengers. The DM was excellent as well. Don't remember his name, but he is easy to recognize as he got a huge compass tatoo on his back (pretty cool) ! I think this experience probably had a high contribution on the family getting into diving. If we had started this year with this Teavanui damn !@@#$%^& club in Fakarava, I'm not sure what the outcome would have been.

Couldn't agree more. I've been to North Fakarava twice and dove with Serge and Carinne at Fakarava Diving Centre both times, except for one afternoon dive that I had to do with Teava Nui because Serge was all booked up - I was very glad to go back to FDC the next day.

TSand M: Don't know if he worked at TopDive, but Serge has a slight resemblance to Bruce Dern.

I dove with Top dive a couple of years ago in Fakarava....had a good experience and the diving was excellent.

Thanks for the tip, Stargost. Who did you dive with on Bora Bora? I was with Giles at Blue Nui and was fortunate enough to have him at both Tikehau and Bora Bora (he owns the operations on both islands and was filling in at Tikehau). He is excellent and I would highly recommend him. No arrogance at all and very proffessional.

I dove with Gilles Petre in Bora Bora indeed. And yes, it was very good as well, especially as we got to see the Mantas. Gilles is married to a charming California girl, so I guess he cannot really have the anti-american/Padi attitude like the folks from Teava Nui.
Also people owning dive club in resort tend to have more 'customers oriented' attitude (and they charge little more as well ;-)

In Tikehau we used Raie Manta Club ("Frank", and some of his DM friends), and there was no complaint at all either.
The facilities of the club are .. interesting, as the club is tiny bungalow, pretty much packed on the inside.

To farsidefan1 -

If tu were kiding about the all speling problemes with thise posts, then watt we kan do only is translate in Francais s'il vous plait ?

If you were serious and were looking for the link "en anglais" to the Fakarava club from Serge and Carine, here it is:
atoll

Voila !

And about this english-french thing: it reminds me another stupid one from Teava Nui: there were 2 DMs, one only was capable of some english. But the french-speaking DM gave the dive briefing to the French group, then his collegue gave the english briefing to the other 'palanquee'. But they swapped when choosing their group, so no one dove with the DM which gave the briefing its the right language, hilarious !

I was serious in asking for an English link. Thank you. I am totally puzzled by your sarcastic spelling remark. Were you able to find something offensive in my request? Since I don't speak French I thought it a very reasonable request. Your description of their service piqued my interest. Sheesh.
