Hi all,

I'm a 31 year old male. I developed a labral tear due to femoroacetabular impingement in my left hip in 2015. In my case, it's due to an improperly shaped ball joint combined with weight training. After conservative treatment (physical therapy and strengthening exercises) from a couple years, I've decided to look into surgery as the pain is not resolving. It hasn't prevented me from diving and doesn't bother me while diving, but without treatment the pain is likely to get worse to the point of needing a hip replacement.

What has been others experience with FAI, the surgery, and diving after recovery? How soon were you back in the water? Did the surgery cause any problems (pain, weakness, or otherwise) for diving?

It seems to me that the recovery from an FAI surgery is longer and more complicated than from a hip replacement and I'm wondering whether it's worth putting up with the pain until it gets bad enough for the hip replacement. If anyone has stories to share, I'd appreciate it!
