the surf and surge have been low for weeks but visibility has been around 10ft, what other factors besides those control water visibility? i like to dive when it is 15-30ft and it has not been for a while.

If souther California is like the Seattle area, longer days and more sunlight cause plankton blooms. My regular dive spot has been around five feet the past few dives. Great for compass skills, lousy for photography.

Get the white canes out!

Visibility is affected by a number of different factors and it is sometimes hard to pinpoint what is causing a bit of murkiness at any given time.

Danclem hit it right on in one main area though ... in many places where you have nutrient rich waters (West Coast), the addition of longer days and more sunlight causes plankton blooms that kill visibility.

The lake where we do most of our training is similar in that during the summer months the surface and shallow visibility is marginal at best due to algae blooms in the water.
