I am doing my checkout dives this Saturday and Sunday and I am very nervous about diving in a lake I have swam in a lake about 10 years ago and love swiming is this normal the unknowns. I didn't have any problems with my skills in the pool, unfortunately I was out of town with work the last OW weeekend last month and couldn't do it till now.

Hi Scubalobo,
I see alot of students that are nervous about the first open water dives. Your instructor will do a good briefing before the dives which should help to relax you and hopefully relieve some concerns thus lowering your nervousness. If you are still nervous after the briefing, talk to your instructor or the divemaster. I remember how nervous I was on my first blue water dive in Cozumel as I was getting ready to exit the boat, now it's how fast can I get in! Take your time, relax, and I bet you'll do great.

I appreciate your advice Danny, I am in Michigan but maybe moving very close to your area my family is from Cleburne/Keene is there many dive sites in that area for my wife and I??

I too felt nervous initially, but once you get below the surface... you'll forget that you were nervous and start enjoying yourself. I'm sure you'll do fine...

Good luck and have fun!!!

Hope you make it back down here, the water is sooooo much warmer than it is in Michigan. You won't be far from me as I'm about 10 miles from Cleburne and Keene. There are several places to go diving in this area. If you get down here let me know. I'm VP of the Diving Rebels dive club and we have outings once a month (sometimes more). I'm always looking for a reason to get wet!

When I went for my OW I was as nervous as a long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs, but after my initial dive I relaxed and really enjoyed the rest of the dives. Just listen to your instructor, relax and have fun...

Ohh, one thing which is important to remember: your OW checkout dives are *not* an exam -- they're just a way for your instructor to evaluate if you've acquired everything learned in the pool and are able to apply it in the presense of something more distracting than pool-tiles :)

Every skill you'll be doing in OW you'll already have done in the pool -- and as you write that you had no problems in the pool, I will expect that you will have a blast in OW.

Have fun, and let's know once the weekend is over how it all went down.

What you were taught in class about how to deal with underwater problems is just as appropriate in anticipation of a dive: Stop -- Breathe -- Relax.

Breathe slow and easy, like a baby. Relax your shoulders, and the rest of your body will follow. Now, you are ready to get in the water and ENJOY your dives!

Remember to notice the joy of the underwater environment while you are going through your skills drills.

Have fun,
theskull
