I took an E-P1 (one of the earliest EVIL cameras, nearly a year old at this point!) underwater to Little Cayman last week, and got some great photos:

Once you add on strobes, the small size of EVIL cameras isn't a huge advantage, but the way the lens sits so close to the focal plane means high quality, inexpensive, wide-angle lenses with symmetric elements are a possibility.
 
Short answer -- no you are not. I'm just one of many who have just purchased the E-PL1 and housing.
