HI,
is this fixable? The hard rubber portion of my dump valve tore free from the BC itself
( See pics) I took it to one shop that said they couldn't do it, but I have to think this can be fixed.

thanks.

Hmmm, lets see. Would I want to be 120' deep with my dry suit and 36lbs of lead, and wonder if the patch on my BC is going to hold? Doesn't sound like one of those things I want to worry about on a dive. The only way I would dive it again was if the manufacturer repaired it. Call IST and ask if they do repairs.

Can this be fixed??? IMO NO,but a better question would be,
Would you dive a BC that had something like that fixed.:no

Looks rather new.. would recommend going to IST. If they cannot help out, I would not get it fixed somewhere else... Agree with the prior two posters...

It's hard to tell from the picture what part is ripped. The OPV itself is probably fine, it looks like it has threads to unscrew from the seating nut. Having replace a few OPVs (but not the sealing surface) I can't imagine it's that hard to fix, but I also wouldn't really care to do it myself.

The BC you have is constructed using a single layer of urethane coated nylon material.

The urethane is on the inside. This is a very common way to build BCs BTW.

The thru fittings on your BC use a molded urethane piece that is RF welded to the urethane on the BC material. This is the "tan" or yellowed looking part on the back of the OPV.

It looks to me like the urethane fitting failed, the center of the fitting tore away from the ring that was welded to the BC material.

IMO, this cannot be repaired, even at the factory. The fittings are welded on to the fabric before the front and back panels of the BC are welded together.

It would seem that a Male/Female threaded dump valve could be used to replace this one.
But I'd have IST look at it before trying to do a homemade salvage job myself.

BTW....I didn't realize IST was still around.

If you just bought the BC new from a diveshop, it should be handled under the warranty.

Work with whomever you bought it from.

If unsuccessful, (as already noted above) this is not an item of gear you want to jury-rig and then wonder if it will hold up when the situation you find yourself in really, really sucks.

Think about it... ;)

If it were mine, and not under warranty, I know I could repair and reinforce the s**t out of it so it wouldn't happen again. it wouldn't look as pretty though. My main concern would be that if the overpressure valve could rip out that easily, how could you be confident that it wouldn't happen to the inflator side? Especially with the cable operated dump valve.
