Has anyone dived it recently? I heard that it might be closed, what do I need to know if I want to plan a trip to it?

http://www.sportstcyr.com/ I think he has more dives on it than most people and he lives in the area and runs charters to the wreck. He is the one taking them out. It seems to be relatively cheap IF they go out. Otherweise from baltimore here it's a heck of a trip to get blown out....JD

What makes the Empress a tough dive, is it the current and the vis in the area, I think I remember that the dive itself isn't real deep? Get me up to speed again.

Its like 130. shallow but cold (very! , temp on botom right now is 38), and any time on it warrents deco and a lower PO for bottom mix and deco and maybe a conservative hang. Dark so powerfull light. Big wreck and vis is not so good (15-20 ft now) so disorientation may come easily, especially if planning to enter the wreck. Current can be a major problem and drifting into the shipping lanes is not a good idea by getting lost on the bottom or losing the anchor line. Caution and experience are a must for the dive...JD

The idea of all of the bodies on it is kind of creepy, I wonder how hard it would be to find them if you were to go in to the wreck?jaydee197:

Dany st-cyr has over 500 dives on that wreck. He'll answer all your questions.
Basically, this wreck is considered by most diver a full blown technical dive in very cold water (32 to 40 degF), low visibility (I,ve seen anything from 2 feet to 40 feets- average is 10-15), current...etc...So one need to bring all his tools...!
It is not close now but theý remove the morring line at the end of October , the 25th I thinq- Verify with Dany, he's the one removing them.
As of this year, if you wish to dive the Empress, you have to know that statistically, there is more chance of bad weather in September and October ( Cold, Rain and Wind...), Its not the best period of the year to plan a trip in my opinion. But weather is never certain...! You may be lucky
