I'm a Fish!
That old saying that "There are no guarantees in life" struck today.

Both of my wrists have crushed ligaments from way to much vigorous training with the PR-24 over the years. Any sharp shock sends a sharp pain right up my arm with the left being real bad. I have some medication for it that I normally take prior to work. I half dose it because it because I don't need the full shot 90% of the time. By the end of 10 hours I know they're there.

I can fight ok and do everything I need to with some exceptions.

After working grave 10 hours on Monday, staying up all day Tuesday (not by choice) and working another 10 hours of graveyard Tuesday night I was pooped.

What is in store for Wednesday but qualification day. 45 and back-up only. If we fail to qualify you turn in your gun, get a ride home and have no LEO powers until you get some remedial firearms training and qualify. It's normally a week off with no gun, no car and no powers.

I was scheduled to shoot at 0700 so I'm there 15 minutes early. Then we get informed that the new housing development, near the range, has complained so we can't start shooting until 0800 which is my normal off duty time. So being pooped to begin with and now sitting around for another hour I'm a Zombie.

Up to the line and through the stages we go for a 60 round shoot. Range is safe, the holes counted and I didn't qualify. No biggie as we get a second try which I have never had to use.

Ok now for the back-up which I normally shoot a perfect score. Range is safe, the holes counted and I didn't qualify. WHAT?

My left wrist is now almost as big as my hand so the range masters agree to let me just shoot right handed for the second round.

Up to the line and through the stages we go for a 60 round shoot. Range is safe, the holes counted and I didn't qualify again. Infact my score is exactly the same. What THE F------?

Per department policy I give up my gun, car, powers and get a ride home. But the Range Masters huddle and made a phone call. After that they hand me my FLUNKY sheet with the instructions on it.

Again it was WHAT THE F------? I get to keep my gun, car and powers but can't work my shift until I get the remedial firearms training which should be Friday. Look at the Under Sheriff's comments:

It just goes to show you how your effectiveness goes down hill after two many hours and then throw in some pain to boot.

Here I am whining about something so trivial while I'm watching the CNN coverage of Katrina.

This is embarrassing but there are no Guarantees.

Yes my friend, sounds like you could use a paid day or two off. Go home, sleep, relax, take some anti-inflammatory meds, then go qualify on the range.
