Hello everyone! Has anybody used the Canon EF-S 17-85mm in an Ikelite flat port? They only recommend a dome, but I prefer a flat for sharper macro pictures. Any ideas what port to use?
Thanks!

I am not aware of any flat port that allows you to zoom that lens. Somehow I thought the lens diameter would not allow the normal zoom operation, but I could be wrong.

You would not be able to use anything but the long end anyway, literally making it a fixed lens.

The 17-85 is not classified as a macro lens.

If you plan on using it for anything wider than say 35 mm you will need the dome for anything remotely sharp. AFAIK that lens has a magnification of 1:5 (not really macro) and a closest focusing distance of 35 cm. I know canon says macro on the side but that just means you can get close to the subject nothing like a bespoke macro lens.

Thanks for the replies!

I have been using a 18-55mm and have found that I mostly work in the 40-55mm range. For that range my flat port has given me sharper pictures than the dome. I expect that I will be using the new lens in a similar range, say 40mm and up. I know that wide angle quality will be compromised and I am willing to make that trade-off.

Jdcpa, it is true that the lens diameter will not allow you to use the ring with the plastic gear in the housing itself, but I thought the focus knob on the port can do that instead.

If you are not using a diopter on the lens in the dome it will appear a bit less sharp but if you want to get the most from the wide end, use the dome and a +2 diopter.

Thanks, Bill. What will be the effect of the diopter at the long end? If I zoom in and get as close to the subject as the lens will let me (min. 35cm), will the results with the dome be sharp enough?
