Hey guys, have been looking at some good entry level regs and have heard great things about Hog D1 Classic Set, and was wondering what the consensus is on the D1 vs the EXP? Is the main difference just the Yoke vs DIN thing or is there more?

there's quite a bit more that is different in the two, but none that you will notice really in your level of diving. Yoke vs. DIN is the main difference, and if you will be diving yoke tanks with non-convertible valves regularly, then you should stick with a yoke first stage. It sits much closer to the tank valve and will be less likely to hit the back of your head. There's a lot more differences in the second stages that you would notice right off the bat, mainly the plastic vs. metal barrel.

The Edge Epic is very close to the D1 internals just doesn't have the swivel turret and 5th port on the end. The main point between the epic and the exp is hose routing. The EXP will go all sorts of different directions up and down but the ports are all around the circumference of the first stage. The Epic and D1 have the ports oriented at 90* from the EXP so the hoses will come straight out the sides. Much better setup especially if you plan on having to use a drysuit hose and then you'll have 5 hoses coming out. With the EXP style regulators they start to look really sloppy with even the 4 hoses on there.

Actually if you use a right angle adapter on the EXP you get some very clean routing even with a drysuit hose on it. My gf's is one of the cleanest reg arrangements around. The EXP also has one HP port instead of two.

Please let me chime in here as well. The EXP was never meant to be an extreme regulator, used is extreme environments, from its inception it was meant to serve the warm water, sport diving market. What does this mean? 1. There is no environmental sealing option for this regulator, if you wish later to make it environmentally sealed it will be exceptionally difficult if not impossible to get the parts to do so and expensive, so if you wish to have that option consider the EPIC or one of the HOGs. 2. Same goes for DIN connectors, it is sold only as a yoke connection so if later you decided you want to change over to a DIN connection it might be difficult, impossible, and or expensive to do so. 3. The EXP uses a 1/2 metal and 1/2 plastic air barrel instead of a full metal one as is the case in the EPIC and the all of the HOG 2nd stages, incidentally this air barrel is also used in the Escape octo. The composite barrel works great but does not retain heat or moisture from the divers exhaled breath so it is not ideally suited to continuous cold water diving. This barrel was chosen to keep weight and cost of the second in the Octopus and our Sport warm water regulator down.

Don't get me wrong, the EXP is a great regulator but lately I have seen some users who seem to be buying it on price without realizing some of the limitations of this model then being disappointed when it is not easily converted or changed later on.
