So despite being an avid photographer above water, I have always resisted getting into it underwater for a couple of reasons...
1. I have too many other expensive hobbies already!
2. I like to travel light!
3. There are almost always lots of photogs on the liveaboards I go on so I can scam pics from them!
4. Most importantly, I like diving clean... by which I mean I use a simple BP+wing setup without danglies and a generally Hogarthian setup.
I added a can light (well not technically since it is a Niterider with a square battery) with a soft grip mount to my setup a while back and I was thinking how cool it would be is someone could basically attach a camera/video to the top of the light and you could use your thumb to turn it on/off or even zoom, and then have the battery and storage be in the canister.
I promptly forgot about this until I was looking at scuba.com with a $100 gift cert burning a hole in my pocket. I was thinking about getting one of those liquid skin X-vision masks since I have 2 of the regular type and love them so much. While looking at that I run across this mask with a HD video/camera built in
I come here to start doing some research and I promptly run across this GoPro Hero and find out all about the bag fix, supposed upcoming fixes for the housing itself etc etc
I also see that Ikelite has some housings for the HD flip and a JVC compact (that gets mixed reviews for the camera itself), although these seem like pricier options, especially once you add in wide angle, considering that the housing itself is as expensive as the whole hero setup (not including the bag fix
)
Anyway... I was wondering if anyone had run any comparison tests or what people thought about the mask option. On the one hand I like the idea of being completely hands free, but I am not sure if I like the idea of having those crosses in my field of vision and I love the way my Xvision fits now!
I like the idea of the GoPro and although I have seen mixed reviews of their support they seem to be confirmed to have a firmware update and a hardware fix to address the underwater focus issues and there is at least one aftermarket vendor working on stuff as well. Any thought on hands free mounting options?
I should add that I am not looking for, and do not expect pro quality video... something that I could turn on and off when there is cool stuff, or perhaps leave on for the duration of a dive and then edit down would be pretty cool.
