Heading for Utila in May and thinking about staying somewhere close to town. Need to find a place close to good snorkeling to keep my wife happy while I'm diving. Stayed at Utila Lodge a few years back and hiked over to beach once. Didn't get over to the easterly point. She's used to snorkeling in Bonaire so its a challenge. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

There's Bandu beach, $2 admission to use the beach and loungers, which I believe is cashed in at the bar for a drink. There's nice snorkeling right off the beach, just watch the entry/exit as it leads out to reef, and be cautious if there's a strong East Wind blowing. Otherwise you can get a bicycle and head down the other end to Blue Bayou, also some of the dive ops will let her get on the boat if there's space whilst you dive.

Regards,
Andy

Bandu Beach & Blue Bayou are the 2 best snorkeling areas around the Harbor (at each end), most of the snorkleing around the main harbor is in & around under the docks, macro stuff. Not sure of the hotels down to the East near Bandu, maybe Andy can help out there, I'm kinda a 'West End' girl. Coral View is down by Blue Bayou, but you would probably want to rent bikes rather then make the trek into town.

If you're not opposed to staying away from town, Laguna Beach & Deep Blue have a nice house reef for snorkeling. Another alternative might be to rent a house over by Paradise cove & use bikes to get back & forth to town as needed.

Destination Utila has a pretty complete listing of available options.

We stayed at Utila Lodge and Laguna beach the last time we were there. Liked both places but trying to get away from all inclusives and check out local places and save some cash. This is our secondary trip going to Bonaire for 9 days in March.
