I see, still getting used to the terminology. Is either better than the other? Are there any true wide angle lenses available for the canon housing?

No wide angle lens available for canon G series

This is just a glass dome so there should not be any great differences between the two

There are reports of shadows in the corners and flare with both could depend on the reflections of the clear housing

Is it possible to use a wide angle lense inside the housing? Apart from the obvious issue of not being able to remove it during a dive, will this cause any issues?

You can get add on lenses that are attached via an extension tube. Here is the sort of thing I'm talking about 58MM Wide angle fisheye macro lens + adapter tube for Canon G12 | eBay
You can get then from 0.45x all the way down to 0.18x.
I use the same sort of thing with macro diopters. The only problem that I can see with fitting inside the housing is that the extension tube I have at the moment would be slightly too long. If I had a shortened extension tube, I could get it to fit inside I'm sure.
The only problem that I can see, and I don't have much experience with underwater photography so others may see more problems, is that having the wide angle inside the housing may get some of the housing into the shot as well.
