Help a decidophobic guy's. My son and I would like to dive this weekend and we are the same distance from Dutch Springs and Brownstone. We have wet suits. I have a 5mil and my son a 7 mil. Neither of us have mastered a hood yet. We are fine staying shallow to stay warm. Where should we go??????????????

I had the pleasure of diving at Dutch Springs this summer. Really nice facility. The folks I met up with- caroln and pir8- dive there a lot. From what I gathered, most prefer DS to Brownstone.

It's $25 to get in. Fair warning. But they have a HUGE staff- I was shocked!

Really good sandwiches at the sandwich shop, too. I mean, REALLY good!

I have never been to Brownstone, would like to go. But I have been to Dutch several times and I would cast my vote for there. You will not be disappointed, but I would tell you to get a hood as most "attractions" are below the 1st thermo...

Where in NY are you leaving from?

Long Island

Have a hood and may use a shallow area to acclimate to it. Last time it caused my mask to leak terribly so I surfaced and threw it up onto a jetty.:D

I dive at Dutch very often. I certainly would recommend it. However, I think you will certainly feel the cold in a 5ml; maybe not so much in a 7ml -- even at the 25 foot platforms (although I did see a dude on the platforms in a shorty last weekend ...) and certainly if you plan to visit any of the attractions.

This weekend is DUI Days at Brownstone -- for that reason alone, I'd suggest heading up that way. And check out diving dry.

And the mask / hood issue -- sounds like you have some of your hood under your mask skirt. The mask skirt has to be against flesh, or it will leak. I tend to wear my mask under my hood.
