I got a kick out of this little blurb in the new Boating magazine. Thought I'd pass it on as an example of how not to do a surface supplied air dive.

Quoted from the pages of Boating Magazine:

"A Missouri resident, who lost his keys in a lake, used a garden hose as a breathing apparatus when he snorkeled 30 feet below to find them. He also tied a 20-pound anchor to his waist. Surprisingly, this ingeneous plan didn't work. On his second dive, the hose slipped from his mouth, and he had to be rescued." - Submitted by Kari Snyder.

Hope he's ok....

That didn't happen in Boone County did it? I know some people there (all of them firefighters) that are dumb enough to try something like that. LMAO!

One of my favorite SB activities is watching stuff like this. This is actually a true story, but I love seeing the changes as it gets reposted. There were 2 threads about this a couple of months ago, including newspaper reports, however:

1. I'm fairly sure it wasn't keys.
2. I'm pretty sure it wan't in Missouri.

Goes to show you, you just can't believe everything you read in a magazine. I think I'll write the editor of Boating Magazine and tell him his facts may be just a little bit off...

You might want to find the original posts first. This is why I used the words fairly and pretty :D. This is just what I recall. I did a search on garden hose but that didn't find them easily...

Ok, I looked a little harder. Turns out the story hasn't changed. It was keys and it was Missouri. Just goes to show, you can't believe everything you read on the internet, especially if it comes from an SB Mod :D....

Here is the newspaper clipping...which is from Kansas. This is my official excuse for not remembering it being from Missouri ;)...

Oh My God, he's from Lee's Summit!!!
(that's where I live).
I hadn't heard anything about it, but then I pretty much keep myself in my happy little world cocoon. :)

Just because it was reported as being in Missouri doesn't mean it actually happened here. And with media sensationalization it could have been a snorkel rather than a hose and clip-on weight instead of an anchor. They always malign the Missourians, especially in alcohol-related boating incidents (at least I hope it took some alcohol for him to be that incredibly stupid!!).

So when will the first garden hose specialty coarse be held?? Was the Anchor right hand release? Oh, no wait... is there a DIR method for garden hoses and anchors?? :1poke: It is a long hose. OK I'll stop now.
