Man airlifted following diving accident

16 July 2005 15:31
A diver has been airlifted from Dublin Bay to hospital in Galway this afternoon after becoming ill with the decompression sickness known as the bends.

He was part of a group which had been diving off The Bailey in Dublin.

The coastguard helicopter took him to University College Hospital in Galway where he is being treated in the country's only decompression chamber.

Apparently one or both BCD's got inflated in the confusion arising from an OOA at 10m. Situation was reportedly handled very well by the crew and both divers were airlifted to the chamber- one just as a precaution. Scary when it happens close to home.

My thoughts are with the diver and his family.

Thought you'd like to know...
I heard today that both divers are home and well.

Thanks,

Nice to hear about one that ends well...
