I'm newly certified, and I know I need a lot more practice and training. I do my ocean training in Monterey, and I freeze easily, so I do it in a drysuit. I'm currently losing weight, so I had originally decided to keep renting drysuits until my measurements stabilize. After some mixed experiences with rentals, I'm looking for an alternate strategy without too severe economic impact. Beyond what was taught in the drysuit course, I know very little about drysuits, so I'm hoping someone can help me :)

For context, I'm currently 6'1" 240lb, and well on my way to reach my goal of about 200lb in a year. I'll probably do about 6 local trips over the next year. Rental rates vary, but average about $75/trip, so the rental option is about $450.

I've pondered getting a custom seaskin and undergarment without any additional options. Cost seems to be about $600. The thought is to use this for a year, then replace it. If I go this path, would compressed neoprene or trilam be more forgiving about weight loss? Would it still be usable or comfortable at the end?

I've looked at buying a off-the-rack drysuit and undergarment. The thought is to use it for a year, then sell it as used. Any recommendations for drysuit+undergarment with the lowest value loss over 12 months?

Last, I've looked at buying a used suit. This is the path I'm least comfortable with, since I don't know anything about judging the state of maintenance of a used suit, and it can be hard to check the fit. Many of the offers I've seen are also more expensive than the seaskin option. Are there any guides for buying used drysuits?

Are there other options I should consider?

If you’re still losing weight, try a Fusion. It will shrink with you. That’s a large reason of why I got once recently.

@Marie13 I've been following your thread about Fusion with great interest. I've shared your experience of having a few bad rental experiences in older Fusions, and your thread gave me hope that this experience isn't representative for owning my own. That said, a "long term" Fusion is a large investment, so if I chose that path, I'd need to wait a few months before I can afford to do so :)

Whether new or used, I would suggest Fusion 2xl/3xl. I am 6'1", 180 lbs, and wish my LG/XL was just an inch or two longer.
If you get down below about 200, you may want to consider replacing the outer skin with a smaller size, while keeping the larger shell. Current front zip are breathable Aircore shell, older versions, most rental, and back zip One suit are Drycore shell, which sweats you a bit more. Try to find one to rent/try first.

@MaxBottomtime I've been looking on ebay (as well as classifieds here) for a few weeks now, but haven't seen anything that looks like it would fit well. I'll keep looking.

@runsongas The rental issue isn't specific to Fusion, it's specific to the availability and state of maintenance of rental gear. The first Fusion I rented was way too large (they were out of 2XL/3XL, so I got a 4XL+). The second time I got a 2XL/3XL, which felt like a good fit, but when trying it in the pool it leaked a lot and the inflation valve was very slowly letting in more air. I do believe that if I got the fit of the 2nd suit with the maintenance of the 1st, I would have been happy with it.

Leaks are not okay, but you don't give any hint of what was leaking. Aside from a puncture or tear, do all seals fit properly? If overweighted, excess air can "burp" out the neck and let water in. Excessive manual use of exhaust valve when no air is exiting will allow water in, same as a BCD inflator. Most overlooked, the two valves may have just loosened and need to be firmly hand tightened to re-establish the valve seal. Connecting inflator UW will put a bit of water on your chest.
And a troublesome inflator (obviously) needs service or replacement.
So you know how that size of Fusion fits and what makes it fairly unique, sounds like you just need to find a good one.
