Despite the fact that I'm currently training for my AOWC I still am fairly new to diving. I'm wondering if there's any way to get rid of the "Dry thoat" not to be confused with "Deep thro.....nevermind" that divers get?

Take the regulator out of your mouth, swallow a few times, and replace the reg. Problem solved.

Stay hydrated as well. :coffee:

I've tried that, normally it doesn't occur to me until my throat is so dry that it's difficult to work up enough spit to swallow. That and for some reason if I'm in salt water, just the taste of the SW on my reg makes me nautious. Any other techniques?

I am wondering about this as well. Does it have anything to do with the fact that we newbies take in more breaths, thus the dry air from the tank dries out our mouth and throat? I had a bad case of cotton mouth on one occasion in the pool and I figured that once I know what I'm doing, my mouth won't get so dry because I won't be breathing as often.

Or is that just wishful thinking?

Well if it REALY bothers you, then you can buy a cammeal back. That being said. dry throat only lasts a few minutes. I have done 70 minutes and not had a problem. maybe you should hydrate youself better before you dive. I drink lots a water.

A little trick I learned while on the Aggressor last year. Before entering the water, turn your reg mouthpiece up and cover the exhaust ports with your hand. Fill the second stage up with water like a cup. On the Aggressor, we used the showerheads on the dive platform, but you could also use a bottle of water. Hold the reg mouthpiece up until you put it in your mouth and do your entry. The moisture inside the reg will give the air you breathe just a little boose of humidity, and does wonders for easing the dry throat.

in the pool sessions, i hated the dry throat feeling, but when i was actually diving, it didn't really bother me.

if it really bothers you, i believe apollo makes a bio-filter that puts a bit of humidity back into the dry compressed air.

Try and find a SCUDA (Self Contained Underwater Drinking Apparatus) http://www.scuda.com/
Never tried one myself but it sounds plausible. Any soft bladder filled with water and a small hose so you can drink without filling your mouth with salt water, and some sort of oneway valve on the end should work. Thinking model aircraft use oneway valves on their filler bottles.

Nice...
I just read something from a tech dive diary... when some spend long hrs under water, they actually drink water or even soup: Regulator out, suck from a tube for liquid, then let some air back from the tube (otherwise the pressure would let sea/lake water in), put back the regulator and continue to breath.....

Some really like the bio filter, some will say it will damage our 2nd stage in time.
Then metal 2nd stage (e.g. mares) would add moisture to the air due to condensation.

Being relatively new you probably inhale too fast, giving your throat a balst of air. The more you dive and learn to relax the slower and easier you will breathe. This does wonders for easing the dry throat.

Me? I just take my regulator out and gargle whatever water I happen to be in, which is always salt water. I don't dive here at home.
