Drowning

Beneath the sea
struggling in vain
resigning myself to the end in a
lucid surrender and plunging beyond the
reaches of any hope of salvation
Languidly drifting through deeper blues with blackness crowding
the edges of my vision shot with hypoxic starbursts of white light...
Buffeted by the smooth hides of shadowed whales
Caressed by waving sea fans
Swept along through tides and
soft clouds of brine over taciturn decaying galleons
I come to rest on golden sand
Lungbubbles shimmering for the surface
jeweled benedictions to the living
rays of sunlight filtering down like
dustmotes in some ancient cathedral as
I smile and close my eyes in irenic repose.

Uhhhh....you OK Frank?

BTW, I did drown as a child; at a family picnic, was playing near a river (creek), fell in and got sucked down by the current of an overflow. Remember being down there, looking up to the surface. Very peacefull. Started to black out. Next thing I knew I was onshore puking my guts and lungs out. One of my uncles dove in and rescued me. Might sound strange but after struggling I gave up and a certain calm came over me. I don't remember being scared or panicing.

Nice poem, but I need to look up a few words (irenic).

Yep. I'm fine. :) I remember reading an account of someone drowning, and they echoed many of your same thoughts on it -- that it was peaceful. I have no plans to drown, but my brain was fiddling with the idea of what it would be like. :) Glad you made it, brother. Kudos to your uncle. :)
