Hi,

My buddy has a Seaquest Diva (the previous model without the surelock). She has, on the past couple of dive trips, dropped the weight pocket out of the BC. Some dive operators say this is a frequent occurrence for weight integrated BCs without some sort of surelock. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to keep those darn weight pockets in?

Cheers,

Scubahiro

Marine epoxy? ;)

Maybe you could sew them shut with few enough stitches that she could tear it open if she wanted to ditch?

Clean the velcro, both the pile and the loop side.

Make sure the pocket is inserted correctly, then run your hand over the flap to ensure that the velcro engages.

Use less weight in the pockets and move some to a weight belt.

At one point I considered sewing on either a fastex quick release clip with o-ring breakaway, or the even simpler solution attaching a large o-ring on the jacket that you would slip over the pocket handle. I didn't do so, but I've never had a problem with the velcro pockets in about 350 dives in one SeaQest ProQD BCD, or 50 dive in a ProQD+. (The old BC is still in active service, but I've bought a 2nd one to avoid schlepping gear back and forth between houses).

Better solution - buy a weight belt or harness....

Thanks for the thoughts. I have never had a problem with my BC, even though the pockets aren't surelock. But, I have heard from others that they have this problem. I wonder if she might be sweeping them with her arms? Thanks!

This happend to me once on my Seaquest Balance. Is she using lead shot (soft wieght)? If so switch to hard blocks as it allows the velcro to adhear better. Just one possible solution.

Diving in Cozumel on one trip I saw two other divers lose integrated weight pockets at depth. Fortunately no problem as there were plenty of divers around to help out. In both cases they were velcro only. After witnessing those incidents I modified my Seaquest Pro QD by making my own shurelock system. You can buy the fastex clips at just about any camping store and a foot of 2" webbing. Then glue them to your BC with marine grade goop. They hold like the devil but present no problems if I want to dump them. Total cost of the retrofit was about 5 bucks. Adds a lot of peace of mind.
I dive a backplate and wing now which I like a lot better.
