Does anyone know a PADI instructor that trains divers on drift dives in the Monterey or Ventura areas. My advanced open water instructor said he wasn't interested because there was too much involved as far as keeping an eye on people, etc. Thanks!

Mind sharing the name of that instructor? I think every one should know what instructor thinks "keeping an eye on people" is "too involved."

Isn't that the very essence of being a scuba instructor

No, I will not share the name of the instructor. I paraphrased his answer when I said why he did not want to train people in drift diving. He just seemed uncomfortable in doing it, maybe it was the dive location or whatever. My reason for asking the question was simply to find an instructor in the area that has experience in training divers for drift diving.

Im always stunned at what people will pay for. Im now offering a "what to do when you leave your weight belt on the boat" distinctive specalty class.
Maybe you could just ask to go with someone who has done it?
Ya, ya, ya, I know, bad instructor.

I did two drift dives in Boynton Beach, FL without the cert and I didn't die. :D

Joking aside, it's simply a matter of descend, drift along above all of the pretty fish and ascend. Someone in the group has to carry a rope tied to the float. Usually one of the experienced drift divers will do that. I simply learned by watching them. Everything else is basic scuba ... buoyancy control, proper descent and ascent procedures, proper weighting, etc. Beyond the basics of diving there really isn't much to it.

However, if you really want to get the cert, be sure and take your Boat Diver certification first. ;)

I just looked at your profile and I see that you have in fact completed your Boat Diver certification. Wow ... OK ... you should be all set then. :D

i have no helpful information as to your question, but i was just curious, why are you taking the drift course? just always like to know people's reasons.

I guess I will answer a few posts: 1) My instructor was not bad, quite the contrary; 2) I am not stressed about drift diving; 3) I have already taken a nitrox class, & 4) I would like to know about any nuances associated with drift diving whether it is learned in the classroom, the ocean or both. I guess none of you know an available instructor but thanks for your advice.
