Any info about Be live Punta Cana hotel diving ? My wife and I would like to do our open water dives there to complete certification. Any info would be great as we are new to diving

There isn't any good diving in the Punta Cana area. It faces the Atlantic Ocean, so the water will usually be rough, and not that clear. Do yourself a favour and do your dives from Bayahibe. It is on the south coast and faces the Caribbean Sea, so the water will be a lot clearer, calmer and warmer. I dove with John from SCUBAFUN PADI Dive Center - Bayahibe, Dominican Republic and can highly recommend his dive shop. Another good dive shop is Diving Dominican Republic - Sharky's Crew They are private diving, so are more expensive because of that.

Look up Dressel Bavaro. There you can set up excursions to this Dressel groups on the Caribbean side. Well worth the extra money and Dressel is a very good group.

The diving in Punta Cana is really not worth the effort

Crap, you're telling me that all the pictures of diving out of the shops along the western side of Punta Cana are BS??? I was a little bit leary about the trip anyway but now I'm very leary. I was looking at either Dressel Divers or Pelicano.

What happened to the guy from Ontario?

My wife and I got certified with Pelicano... all and all we were happy.

Assuming that "the guy from Ontario" story referred to this one: Wife says Dominican police 'won't do anything' after Ottawa man dies on scuba outing

I recall that diving in Punta Cana was good for learning to dive with surge, but that was about it. Not much live coral, very few fish (versus other Caribbean locations), plastic bags stuck in the sand, etc. However, it does offer a great beach for any non-divers that you are travelling with.

If you are tied down to Punta Cana, you might as well dive it once or twice, but otherwise try and get a trip to Bahahibe/Catalina Island/etc. set up. Far better diving there than in Punta Cana.
