I have read anecdotal accounts of this happening, but never yet from a major media organization.

Without following the links posted above, I assume you are talking about the 4 lifeguards here in New Zealand.
Pretty cool story. Even better is the fact that the lifeguard who eventually broke the story waited for a while before telling the media so that people wouldn't hunt the shark. Great to see someone who cares enough about marine life to do this.
