Anyone know of any dolphin encounters in St. Thomas? My girlfriend has been wanting to do one for years. Any experiences or thoughts?

Sorry, at the current time, there are no dolphin programs in St. Thomas. And none nearby that I'd recommend.

If you're wanting dolphins, Cozumel, Roatan, Curacao and Freeport Bahamas would be the best options in the Caribbean. There are others, but I don't feel comfortable with the way the dolphins are kept.

There is at least one captive dolphin park in the western atlantic that is perfectly P.C. to visit, the Dolphin Research Center in the Florida Keys.

It's a retirement and rehabilitation facility for the most part, with a little bit of captive breeding. You can sign up for "encounters" where you directly interact with some of the animals, albeit under strict supervision. It's a wonderful educational site, and there's decent diving in the surrounding area (Pennekamp, Looe Key). I heartily recommend it if you're looking to satisfy the dolphin enthusiast.

Please keep responses on topic. If you would like to discuss your views on dolphins and/or other creatues in captivity, please start a new thread - perhaps in the environmental area.

Thank you :)

Sorry, I thought it was on topic. The original post did ask for thoughts on the subject.

I did this. the simple one where you stand on the dock hip deep in water and get to touch them and so on. It was neat. I enjoyed t. They do have a program that lets you swim with them. They only allow a couple of people at a time and it's up to the Dolphins weather or not they want to do anything. Several times we had to wait till the dolphins decided they wanted to swim with us. They just took off and came back when ever they were ready and sometimes a totaly differant dophin came back. It wasn't cheap to do though. The dolphins used were rescued for the wild and when they fully recovered they were released back into the wild. Some can never go back. Seemed like a good well run program.

Hey Fgray, you don't happen to recall what kinds of dolphins they had at that Nassau facility? Remember the name, maybe I can look it up online?

The name of the place is Dolphin Encounters on Blue Lagoon Island, The web site is www.dolphinencounters.com. As you know I'm no great envionmentist but I was impressed at the way things were done there. They don't have pools it's all done in a lagoon in large penned off areas.

I live in ST Thomas, and as previously stated there are no captive encounters. We do however get lucky once in a while and have a dolphin join a dive or travel along next to our boat. There is however a dolphin program in Tortola BVI. You can take the ferry over in the morning, spend the day and swim with the dolphins and then return to St Thomas in the evening. I have never experienced this program, however others that have said it was great.
