Hi, I'm planning on writing up my Tech One experience with Beto Nava and JJ in Monterey as it occurs.

So the first part was a couple of nights ago, the swim test. And prior to that the last year with 20% of my 180 dives devoted to working on skills.

500 yds in 14 minutes. Actually the requirement was 400 yds in 14 minutes. Beto figured it was way too easy for us so he increased it 100 yds. We averaged about 11 minutes on this one. Then the underwater breath hold swim, we did the length of the pool at 75 feet or so.

Once done with that Beto talked about what distance do we think we could swim underwater to our buddy with full gear if we ran out of gas and had to swim to our buddies. Our answer was um....about 2 feet because our buddies would be good buddies and would be attentive enough to spot us out of gas quickly. :D

Actually we figured about 20 feet or so.

We (Todd, Greg and I) are pretty excited. It's Pt Lobos reserve for Day 1 of Tech One. Stay tuned.

What is it with GUE instructors and the swim test? Does anybody EVER just do the required distance?

I've swum 25 feet to a buddy, simulating being OOA, and I'll tell you it isn't fun and doing that exercise makes you MUCH more aware of how much team separation you're willing to tolerate.

If the swim test gets much longer (I did 400 yards in ~11 minutes for fundies) I am bringing my scooter.

Enjoy your class, I look forward to reading about it.

You could just grab line off your spool and tie it to the guy in front of you to get a tow :eyebrow:

Cheers :D

If anything keeps me from passing Fundies and moving on, it will be the swim test, no matter how much work I do on the skills.

Fundies swim test is very passable, even for the swimtarded in the world.
Yep. I just went on my back and kicked my legs. Finished with lots of time left.
