Hi,

I'm planning to get a bw/w setup and am wondering how many of you use your bp lumbar pocket? And if so, what do you store in there? I've heard that the pad itself is optional (especially if you're diving with a drysuit in cold waters). I do have 2 pockets on my drysuit to hold a SMB and other misc. stuffs.

TIA.

I didn't have it originally then got it because drysuit pockets are not big enough for larger SMBs and liftbags. The BP pack is good for storing those. If I need more than one SMB (back up emergency bag usually) that is where it goes. There is no way you can shove the thing back there though, so once it comes out you better be using it (as in if you are practicing shooting bags, it's not ideal storage).

I have heard other people putting other stuff there, so I await with interest what other responses you might get.

I find it very useful for the above purpose alone, as I do not so much like hanging bags above my butt or on d-rings. (Some have also said that the pad protects their drysuit from wingnut rubs when diving doubles. Has not been an issue with me)

I don't need, have, or want one.

I put large aftermarket thigh bellows pockets on my drysuit, and they have room for everything I need, including a large SMB.

Don't use one either. I either use a large velcro bellows pocket on my waist strap if I'm diving wet, or my drysuit pockets

I have one and I use it to store one of the two SMBs I carry. I you think you have enough space in your pockets for everything than the bp pocket won't make much of a difference. And you can always buy it without and add it later if you realize you need it.

I keep one on my doubles plate, where I store a 50# lift bag. I think it's noticeably cleaner than bungeeing the bag to the bottom of the plate. Everything else I need (including my SMB) goes in pockets on my dry suit.

To be clear, these add nothing to comfort and are merely a means of adding storage space.

When I eventually move to doubles, no time nearby. I will get one and place a lift bag for redundancy in their

I have my sausage neatly stuffed in there ;) and clipped to the rear D-ring on the crotch strap. Convenient when I need it, easy to get out and deploy, and I never know it's there until I need it... which happened to be last week in the strong currents of Coz. The only problem is that before each dive you have to make sure it isn't falling out, and position the valve right at the end of your backplate so that it doesn't poke you in the back.
