It is a time honored tradition in the US military and some foreign military. A coin is normally from the Command level unit or unity level organization. When in a bar or club, one individual would show his/her challenge coin. The last one to show their coin or didn’t have one would buy a round for the group. Another tradition is to trade coins with other service members and for commanders to give them in recognition of service.
 
We always looked at the value of the coin to determine who would buy. The person with the lowest value bought the round. I had several Presidential, Vice Presidential and Air Force One coins, so I was good.
