Do I need instructions?

Hi all.. I know nothing about diving..but.. was wondering if I need instructions before i go diving? the reason I want to dive..I dropped a pretty good shotgun in about 8 feet of water.I have looked for it for hours with my fish camera but no luck.. thanks!

Find a diver who can hover in shallow water over a presumably silty bottom and run a search pattern or, better yet, has access to an underwater metal detector.

Even if you get instruction, you will not have time to refine the necessary skills before the gun is rusted beyond repair.

As for why you would need instructions, in as little as 4 feet of water you could rupture a lung if you screwed up.

Most divers would look for it for free. Even more for a 6 pack and a thanks. I'm sure there are divers near. Just tell them where to meet you.

Even if you didn't need instruction and practice for diving (you do), how were you planning on getting the gear? The rental of a complete package might cost $50 or more. If you offered to reimburse a diver for the cost of the air fill (about $5) and threw in a case of beer (as per ZenDiver.3D) you would probably have many takers.

What I am missing? Guns are made of steel, wouldn't a magnet and a piece of line would do the trick? Both as a location tool and a retrieval mechanism?

Grumpy, I bought 4 250 pound pull magnets and searched the area for several hours.. I tied them to a piece of 1 inch pvc pipe and made a 3 foot wide magnet searching tool..

If you did not find it with the magnets, then most likely the gun is not in your search area. It is very, very hard to know exactly where you drop something into the water since you have few visual references. I once lost a good pair of glasses in 4' of clear water at the dock. I swear I knew within a couple of inches where they dropped. I had snorkel gear and spent over an hour with no success. Another time I dropped a wrench overboard. I found it (it was cheap compared to glasses), but it was at least 6-7' from were I though I dropped it. So, expand your search grid.....
