I am new to cameras underwater, and just bought a 570 IS with the canon housing on the way. I see that a wieght is available for this camera and am want to know if it is an important part. also i have read that some poeple put moisture munchers in the housing with the camera, is this normal for every dive? Thanks!!

You will need some unless you purchase a grip, strobe etc. Most people make their own weights. Some moisture packets come with the housing, use them initially and purchase more from any of a number of sources.

I use a 570 IS with a Canon housing, without weights. With the housing alone, the camera is very easy to manage. And I prefer the camera being buoyant so it floats up and out of the way when not in use.

If you don't have strobe and stuff, I'd recommend some weights. I don't use the moisture munchers and don't have a problem whatsoever. I'd HIGHLY recommend a coil lanyard to clip the camera on to a D-ring on the BCD.

Also, if you haven't done so already, you might want to add the CHDK hack so that you can shoot in RAW.

My first digital underwater camera had a fogging problem one day during my first trip with it, and I lost some good photos. Since then, I have faithfully used the dessicant packs and never had a problem. Here's where you can get them:
Silica Gel Desiccant and Acid Free Tissue Paper
Get the silica gel 2 gram packs - they are very small and will fit the Canon housings.
Using the silica gel dessicant packs is cheap insurance that you won't have a fogging problem; I highly recommend them.

I am new to this. I am trying to download and install CHDK hack. Can it be used on a 16GB card? It seems that the utility will only make a 4GB or less bootable. Thanks

The camera came with a 16MB card, but I also have a 16GB card. So I now assume it can not be loaded on anything greater than 4GB.
