Hey everyone!

Well here's my story:I am 8 months into a deployment to Iraq, fixing to take mid-tour leave and of course, go scuba diving in my home state of Texas. I got my OW last July, took AOW in early October and did several dives outside of classroom settings before deployment, as close as two days before leaving out. But I am just concerned on whether I need to go for PADI's OW Refresher course or not. I have been doing plenty of reading, mental practice, and going over my notes from previous dives but it never hurts to get a second opinion.

I've never had confidence problems in the water, even when I got back from my first deployment of 14 months. Damn near got off the plane and headed straight for the beach with snorkel gear in hand. Of course I took to diving fairly well and did not have any problems with either OW or AOW, minus a minor "narcing" episode during AOW. I'm pretty confident in my skills, but like I said, outside opinions don't hurt.

Peace,
Greg

I wouldn't say you need a refresher, mayybe dive with some experienced folks, take the first few dives slow.

when I got back I did some shallow dives first, then went on some nice deep dives :D

BTW What unit u with?

It doesn't sound to me like you need a refresher!

Be safe and have fun in the water! Bruce

Ditto.

Shark's Cove should be nice today - you're lucky to have it in your backyard. After years of contemplating getting certified, it is the place I was snorkelling when I decided to get certifed three years ago. I was jealous of the divers down below hanging out - got fed up with staying in the top 10'.

Have fun - take it easy, with some good divers, and you'll be fine.....

Most dive shops will have their own policies on when a refresher is required. It is hard to give a recommendation over the internet...it really is something that an instructor needs to see.

I expect, from what you said, that a 'check-out' dive - in shallow, easy conditions would be your best bet. From there, you (and your instructor) can decide how well you are coping with being back in the water.

Confidence is one issue.... ability to perform the required skills...and cope with basic emergencies is another.

First, enjoy your time off and thanks for doing what you do...

As for the question, I suggest making sure your buddy or charter is aware of your situation, most divers I know will be more than happy to take the time to make sure you are comfortable again. As has been said, take it easy for a couple dives to get yourself reaclimated and stay within your comfort level. That said, if a refresher makes you feel better, do it, it's a dive with an instructor which if nothing else, is a good dive.

I'll do my best, the TSD forum divers already have the word and several have told me to hit them up.

I bet Shark's Cove is really nice today, but alas I am going to Texas to be with family. Hawaii's another 3 and half months away or so. BTW, last time I dove Shark's Cove I got over an hour of bottom time on an AL80. Saw all kinds of neat critters, including glowing crabs. Shark's Cove and Makaha Beach are on me and my dive buddies To-Do list once we get back.

Peace,
Greg

As other said above doesn't sound like it. Just go slowly and enjoy.

Just caught your user name, Let's hope not!;)

Add another vote for no. :-) As was said, just let your buddy know it's been a while, go over your buddy checks again and discuss procedures/communication (i.e. separation, OOA, etc), do a couple mask clearing drills upon first entry, etc. You'll be fine. Just dive within your limits, not your buddy's.

I earned it paintballing, actually. Tended to intercept incoming paint with my facemask, sparing my teammates. Luckily, I'm not a line soldier.

Peace,
Greg
