Do I need to wait for my c-card in order to purchase tanks or get a fill? I want to do some beach dives but I don't have my own tank yet? Also how long does it normally take for the card to come in?

Kevin

You should have gotten a temp card from your LDS. If not, just ask. You can rent/purchase stuff from your LDS anyway. I've never been carded from other places when buying stuff, anyway. It takes a couple of weeks for C-cards to come in, but they are normally sent to your instructor, who should contact you to let you know it's in. Just ask your instructor when the cards are expected.

How long it takes depends on the agency but, like was said, get a temp card from your LDS.

You shouldn't need a Card to get tanks or to get them filled either, since tanks are used for more than just scuba diving.
Really? Any examples of local sources that will fill scuba tanks for non-divers - or for uncertified divers?

Excuse my ignorance, but I'm pretty sure that's why we became certified in the first place...no reputable dive shop will fill a scuba tank without a c-card. As a DM candidate, the shop I am working with knows me, knows I am more than certified to dive, yet still requires a c-card from me to fill my tanks.

What sometimes happens is that an LDS will fill a SCUBA tank though the person is not certified.

I've actually done this years ago while paintballing. You'd use SCUBA tanks to fill your compressed air before fields started buying compressors. You could get some places to fill tanks, because they knew it wasn't for diving.

This is less and less common since now there is little reason to fill SCUBA tanks for other than diving.

We do fill tanks for paint ballers. We make them sign a statement that says they will only use this tank for paintball.

I have reservations about it and would prefer not to fill paint ballers tanks.

I know one local shop that used to fill tanks for paintballers and made them sign the statement/waiver. Then a couple of them came in to buy replacements for the fins they lost and ruined it for all of them. :11:

Besides, ever try to viz one of those itty-bitty 4500 psi hoop wrapped gizmos?

If you go into a dive shop (where you aren't well known) and get your tanks filled without having your c card checked, I'd be REAL cautious about breathing that air.

You want to breath air at depth that is used for paintball (which is what you're referring to, i'd assume)?

You can PURCHASE tanks off ebay or other online sources without showing a card. (other than a credit card)

To rent them, you'll need a c-card. Where's your temp card?
