Diving / Whale Sharks via Riviera Maya

I'm staying at the Grand Riviera Maya Princess next week on a big family trip.

How is the diving in the area ?

Additionally I was thinking about doing the whale sharks trip in Isla Mujeres - are there any operators that will take us there from Riviera Maya ?

The diving off of Playa del Carmen (which is what the Princess is closest to) is actually really good. Lots of critters, good combination of shallow and deep sites, and then of course you have the cenotes just a short drive south of town (some closer than others). For the whale sharks, several operators pick up at resorts to take you to the whale shark trips.
