Well finally got the weather to cooperate and allow a boat out of the docks. Ive been trying since Sept. 11. I went out with Lynnhaven Dive Center on the Miss Lindsey.
We were suppose to dive the Tower & the Tug, but once we got to Tug thats were we stayed which was a bit of a downer since me & my buddy DrSteve had done a 49 min dive on the Tug there really wasnt much that we didnt see (well with less than 5ft vis it took 3 trips around to see it all)) on the 1st dive.We were told that a line was run to a Trolley car so we tried that & all that was there was as Steve said A really fine set of old tires. We still stayed for 46 min on the 2nd dive & were the last duo to return to the boat.
Water temps were in the very lower 60s, but not that bad when you havnt got to do a ocean dive in a while.
Depths were under 70 as I dropped to the sand on both dives recording 68fsw & 66fsw.

I'm a Hampton Roads resident but just started diving this spring. Just a quick question...is there a pretty strong change in the visibility off Virginia Beach as we enter the winter months? I'm guessing I can get a few more dives (maybe just 1) in before the end of year with my current equipment (7mm variety). What's been your experience?

Hey Pook Im not all that experienced around here but Im trying to hit as many sites as possible. Seems as tho the further offshore you go the better the vis.I went out yesterday ( Sunday ) to the Luchenbach with Lynnhaven dive center. It was 27 miles off shore & even with rough conditions we had decent vis. 10-15 feet maybe a little better.
I will be putting out a dive report later so feel free to check it out. I also did a report on the Barge to give you another site to consider. Im thinking about trying to go again on Sat 12-03 if your up for it, but the water temp was in the mid-50s so a 7mm wet might be pushing it. I dove a 6.5mil semi-dry with a 2mil shorty under & was fine even tho everyone else was diving dry.

Looks like an interesting dive, but...I'm committed to a Christmas party that day:
Lillian Luckenbach. 6,369 ton freighter sunk on March 27, 1943 after colliding with SS Cape Henlopen. The wreck lies on it's port side. The bow and stern are recognizably intact, the amidships section is more broken down. The superstructure is scattered in the sand.(105 fsw).

You've got me curious though about combining suits. I'm going to see if I can still move after putting on my 3mm + 7mm. I think I'll post my spousal unit nearby with a pair of scissors so I don't end up on this year's Darwin Award list.

I'll be in touch. Thanks again.

Well the semi-dry I have is not real tight in the mid- section( Im not that big a person ), but I did notice I had a hard time putting my arms down to my side on the boat, & decending it put a pretty good squeeze on. I dont know why , but it seemed to go away at depth, maybe it leaked just enough. I was thinking of pulling my neck seal to compensate & I was real glad that I didnt need to do that burrr. 57% water is shocking.
Oh definatly get your spouse to take a pic. before cutting you out.
