Hello all:

I was wondering if anyone can help me out.

I am going to the Dominican Republic in february 2005 ( Puerto Plata & Sousa area) and would like to dive while I'm there. I have searched the Scuba Board for reports and comments. Most have been that the diving there is OK to average.

Most seem to compare it to the dive paradises such as Cozumel or the Cayman Islands.

My question is... who would you suggest I contact there. I have found "Northern Coast Diving Aquasports" in Sousa.

Has anyone used them ? Are there others ? And how is the diving really ?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

BTW: I am a cold water, low Vis, swift current diver, so anything with warm water is paradise. (wink) Thanks

Hmmmmm... no replies at all ...

I hope it's not because no one likes diving in the Dominican Republic ...

Getting concerned here (wink)

The DR is not a dedicated dive destination and for good reasons. Plus, the better diving, on balance, is centered far to the SSE around La Romana/Bayahibe.

Nonethless, IMHO the Sousa/Puerto Plata area is definitely worth diving if you are there, albeit hardly world-class. Airport Wall, Coral Gardens & Three Rocks can be lots of fun.

Northern Coast Diving Aquasports is the op I recommend.

Best regards.

Thanks Doc.... I am not really surprised by your comments, I kinda expected that.

You have me feeling better about it already and I will dive while I'm there. I appreciate your feedback.

Cheers

Hi Al,
How did you like the north coast of DR? I'm planning to go at the end of January. I've been diving a while, but my boyfriend is a newbie, and we are looking to test the waters for him. Anything will beat the quarries where he got his cert, and DR is one of the cheapest flights we found for a last minute at high season trip. We could do Bayahibe, but overall Sosua and Rio San Juan sound like they have a lot more character, and so we're leaning towards one of those. Any advice would be much appreciated. Great diving to you in 2006!

Did you hear back from Al on diving at the north coast DR? Or do you have a report on diving there ? Niece is getting married next spring. Any report would maybe help me to decide to bring my gear or not.

Thanks MasterMachinist
