Hi. I am in Singapore in mid March next year and I was told by my travel agent that I could get across to Johor, Malaysia and do some diving!! The islands I have found on the web that are scuba spots near Johor are Palau Rawa and Palau Besar. Which of these islands is the best one to dive at if I only have 1 day's worth of diving to do? I'm only in SIng for 3 nights so to figure out if it's worthwhile what can I expect to pay (roughly?)Many thanks.

You can add Pulau Tioman and Pulau Aur to your list of options. Ferries for all four islands leave from Mersing.

You'll find a lot more information about Tioman and Aur - they tend to get the most visitors. I know nothing about diving at Besar and Rawa. Mostly I dive at Tioman.

You can get to Mersing via bus or taxi. Or drive if you like - it's only an hour or two. Not sure the cost - I usually drive in from Kuala Lumpur.

Ferries leave Mersing about 07:30 and are about an hour and a half. Return ticket is around MYR90.

Dives on Tioman range from RM75 to RM90 or thereabouts. Depends on how many dives you do and whether you cart your own gear along. I usually dive this place: Welcome to Tioman Dive Centre

If you're only there for the day, ferries return to Mersing 16:30 to 17:00. Frankly, you'll be rushing to squeeze it all in. I'd recommend leaving Sing on a Friday evening and staying at Mersing overnight. Take the 07:30 ferry - gets you on the island around 09:00. Most of the dive shops on the island will be able to arrange accommodation. Few dives Sunday morning and return say 14:00. Gets you back to Sing in plenty of time.

Oh and here's another helpful link - tioman

Tioman.....Duty Free Booze!!!

Hi. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out. I am definitely leaning towards Tioman! Redang was another option my travel agent gave me but it's just too hard (logisitically) to get there and back. Hope you have a merry christmas and that you manage to get some diving in somewhere :)
