I probably wasn't clear here- we aren't looking to dive in SA- just want to check out some of the natural beauty there.

Hi jacqie
In respect to the "natural beauty" of Kangaroo Island, are you aware that about half of the island was burnt by bushfires in January 2020? Please refer this following tourism operator's website for some more information - Kangaroo Island Bushfires 2020 | Exceptional Kangaroo Island

Jacquie,
Somewhere on the Sunshine Coast (an hour north of Brisbane) for instance Mooloolaba, would give you access to Flinders Reef, ex HMAS Brisbane and Wolf Rock (about an hours drive north to Rainbow Beach). Sunreef in Mooloolaba also do whale watching trips.

I think that we are going to end up based in Mooloolaba and do those dives- thanks for the advice! It seems the best central place.
