New, unused diving magnifying glass from www.Diving-Magnifying-Glass.com
My wife loves hers, but I don’t need another one because I'm always looking through a camera lens. New cost delivered to the USA is $145. I’ll sell for $115 shipped anywhere in the USA. I Accept Paypal, Venmo or Zelle.

How do you think you will go with your sale if you raise the price
and don't request Paypal (friends and family) because we are not

You know to ease the buyers mind

happy-diver,
I don't understand your post? Can you please clarify what your concern is?
I didn't change the price - I only clarified that the shipping should be less than $10 anywhere in the USA.

What is the purpose of you requesting

I Accept Paypal (friends and family)

When we have not yet been introduced

Paypal charges fees for businesses getting paid for products they sell. I'm not a business. I'm just an individual selling an item I don't need, similar to having a garage sale.
When someone sends money to friends and family, there's no fee charged. Anyone buying something on this forum is part of a COMMUNITY and therefore is a "friend" of sorts. I'm just trying to save buyer and seller some money.

While some consider frequent visitation and posting on ScubaBoard to equal being part of a community, most are still faceless entities posting from behind a keyboard without any "real world" contact with those they "interact" with on these forums.

That said, asking for puchase payment via PayPal "friends and family" leaved the buyer without any protection should the item not arrive or not arrive in the expected/agreed upon condition.

This is not meant to insinuate that you lack scrupples, but there have been problems with folks buying/selling stuff through the board and there has been considerable discussions about the issue.

What I believe happy-diver is saying is that it is better to list the methods of payment you accept (e.g., paypal, zelle, venmo, etc.) and if you are concerned with paying fees to the service as the recipient of funds, then increase your price to cover those fees and advertise that fact in your "for sale" listing.

Price negotiations, final price, payment method, and mode of shipment should all be discussed via private message. If you or your potential buyer want to suggest and agree on using a method of payment that leaves out protection for the buyer and/or seller, then that is something that should be discussed and agreed upon via private communications.

I hope that clears things up, and good luck with the sale of your gear.

I do not like Paypal (non Friends and Family) because Paypal reports those transactions as commercial and involves the IRS.
it has nothing to do with community or trust.

For 2024 the 1099-K reporting threshold for PayPal was if total "goods and services" payments exceeded $5000. For 2025 the threshold is $2500, and for 2026 the threshold drops to $600.

I wouldn't want to pay income tax on personal property sold regardless of how much I sell, but as a buyer, I appreciate the protections that selecting"goods and service" provides when making a purchase from a relatively unknown source.

Not to be argumentative, but a seller stating they only take payment via "friends and family" makes me at least raise an eyebrow from a suspicious perspective.

As an aside, the issue is one of capital gains, so if one is selling their property for equal or less value than at which they originally purchased the item, the value does not need to be reported as income....either there is an exemption line on the worksheet or it will be resolved if/when audited by the IRS....either way, a copy or scan of a receipt is needed to substantiate the original purchase price. If the item is sold at a profit, then it is subject to capital gains tax, but it is only really an issue if the total sales for the year exceed the reporting threshold.
