Hello everyone at scubaboards! I'm going to Florida for the first time and my good friend wants to teach me how to scuba.

He says we'll take a boat out into the ocean, and probably go into caves and shipwrecks.

Since this wil be my first time going scuba, I wanted to find out how much it costs, and whether I need a permit to buy a speargun (going to catch dinner!)

Assuming this is a legitimate question...

Don't dive without proper training. Unless your friend is an instructor and is willing to teach you a full course, I wouldn't necessarily count that as proper training.

As a new diver, wrecks and caves are no place for you to dive and I wouldn't even consider giving you a speargun yet. If your friend is willing to take you to these places, you should really reconsider their judgment.

There are a lot more things you should be concerned about at this point than having permits.

Cave Diver almost said it all--he didn't mention the folly of using a spear gun the first time you are diving.

Everything after this is just for emphasis: what you are describing is so scary on the face of it that I suspect it must be a joke and that you just joined the forum to get a laugh from the response. If your question was serious, please understand the horror the seriousness of what your friend is proposing.

I was editing while you were typing. :)

Thanks for the quick reply. Can I sell spearguns on craigslist? Is it considered a firearm? How much will the scuba cost? My friend says about $1250 for equipment rental. If I have a case, can I bring my iPad underwater?
Wil the touchscreen work? What's a good pre dive cocktail? Is it ok to eat breakfast before? Can I pee in the ocean?

Thanks!
Lisbeth from Finland!

Well I guess that answers the legitimacy question...

Your followup post pretty well screams of insincerity, but for the benefit of other new users who may stumble across this thread with legitimate concerns, I'll address your questions.

Spearguns are not firearms, but may be considered weapons.

Prices for the course and equipment will vary depending on your locale and your choices. It's wise to do your research before you commit.

That is an absurd price for renting equipment. You could buy a fairly nice setup of your own for that price.

You can bring your iPad underwater. Whether it survives the trip is a different matter entirely.

Don't drink before diving.

Breakfast would probably be a good idea.

Yes.

I'm also wondering if your friend has a big life insurance policy on you. Cause it sounds like he/she is planning to collect on it. What anyone reading this thread should realize is that what the OP is asking about is akin to playin Russian Roulette with an automatic that has a round chambered. :shakehead:

Sounds like a sincere :troll: to me :D. Let us know how the iPad fares. I heard they are pretty absorbent.
