I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question but this forum seems to get a lot of traffic so I'll give it a go and if I get my hand slapped then so be it! lol!

Is there anyone that lives in the seattle area, or more specifically up near Bellingham? My girlfriend and I live in Montana and would like to take a drive over to Bellingham, visit a friend who lives there, and dive for crabs somewhere in the area. We would like to find an area somewhere in the ballpark of 20-50ish feet deep that is fairly close to some public access and a good place to swim around and collect crabs. Does anybody have any suggestions of a good place to do this?

I am actually kinda surprised that there is not a PNW region in our regional forums section. We have a pretty good group of PNW divers that I am sure will chime in here shortly. @NWGratefulDiver

When we were in Bellingham, we visited a local dive shop and were told nobody dives in the area. They all go down to Seattle or up into Canada. It is not that far from Vancouver, BC, and the diving there is interesting. I would make the trip again.

You should contact the local dive shops for information.

There is, or used to be, a PNW section on ScubaBoard. It never got much use ... and I don't frequent it that often.

To respond to the OP, Bellingham is pretty far north of me ... roughly 100 miles. So I don't get up that way very often, as there is a great deal of diving to be had more local to where I live. There is a dive shop in that area called Adventures Down Under, and another called Washington Divers. They both have web sites and Facebook pages where you might inquire of someone with more local knowledge of the area.

Vancouver is reasonably close to Bellingham, and the diving's much better. But there is some local diving in the Bellingham area ... and reasonable access to the San Juan Islands from there. I just don't know the area well enough to specifically recommend someone.

Many years ago we did a dive in Bellingham Bay, right out of a park there, for crab. We got a lot. We were on a dive boat out of Bellingham and the divemaster took us there after the boat diving.

If you're willing to make the hour-long drive, the mukilteo T-dock is a great place to catch crab.
