Hi! My soon-to-be-husband and I are debating about diving in the Maldives on our honeymoon. We've never dived in this region before and would really appreciate some good advice. What are the "must-dive" sites and what sort of dives could we do there? THANKS!!

I have been to Karumba Village and did around 6 Dives off of the Male Atoll...

I think wherever you go it will be beautiful, I specifically enjoyed seeing Sharks (nothing scary) including a huge whale shark, large Mantas and HUGE Napoleon Fish.

There's a lot of drift diving (pretty strong currents) which you enjoy if you are lazy, just let the current take you and the boat will meet you at the other end.

Maldives is one of the most beautiful places I have been diving to (I still haven't done the Red Sea which they say is the most beatiful diving place in the world).... but the Maldives offers a romantic atmosphere which the red sea doesnt... but then dont forget, as Harrison Ford said in Six Days Seven Nights: Honey, its an Island, if you don't bring it with you (romance), you aint gonna find it!!!

ENjoy....

This is one of those places I seriously considered (bought several books, hounded websites). Although we chose Galapagos over them (weather) I had planned to do a 10 night liveaboard (around the boot shaped one) and stay at Ellaidhoo (sp?) resort on Ari Atol, which apparently has some of the best diving in the Maldives (although they all sound good).

Ellaidahoo was on a fairly large island (relatively speaking) and is considered a serious diver place to stay (booked mainly out of German and French travel agents). One of the gentleman on the Galapagos trip had been to the Maldives many times and raved about them.

The other area I seriously considered was one of the new resorts up in the northern atols that were so new (summer 01) that there really wasn't much information available about them (other than they were very plush resorts, high end).

Here are the books I read:
Lonely Planet (not so hot for a honeymoon type vacation... you can't leave the airport without a reservation)
Bradt: Maldives. Very good book for divers.
Fish of the Maldives (not the one everyone is trying to find).

In addition to this site, here are the sites I used (haven't been to them in a while).

http://www.visitmaldives.com/site/site_map.html
(This site has many links to the official sites/boats/resorts)

Specific resort

has a message board/chatroom

One of the not so easy to find links (at least when I was looking) that is from the same site as #1. Lists the boats and itineraries.

My other sites were a travel agency and a specific boat. Neither site exists any longer.

Thanks a bunch for your input! :) I'm really excited to be able to start our research with a better focus.

Hi Sel,

Just returned from my 3rd trip to White Sands, Ari Atoll. Saw 11 whale sharks, pretty spectacular stuff. Anyhow, going to the maldives for diving the most important thing to consider is when you are going. This should make a big difference to which island to choose. e.g. Manta Point season south is Dec to mid Apr. Whale sharks are most common in South Ari in May (40 sightings in Month of White Sands) and November, the time when the monsoon changes (and also what is know as rainy season, although this usually equates to half an hour of rain followed by glorious sunshine again and is the cheapest time to go). It is better for visiblility to go in Feb or August and to choose an island that is on the side of the Atoll that receives an ingoing current. West - Jun to Oct and East - Dec to Mar (I think that's the right way round). Ellaidhoo is a good bet although they have built a wall to try to retain sand and stop the island shifting and someone did tell me that this has had some negative effect on the house reef.

If you go South Ari then dive Broken Rock, Kuda Rah Thila and there is a new site discovery which has been titled 7th Heaven which is a fantastically spectacular soft coral dive, really nice.

check out www.euro-divers.com for other island dive ops, they are excellent.

Mattiedread,

I to would probably go to Galapogos over the Maldives but as its 4 times the price perhaps it is not a comparrison like with Like.

Neilstewart,

Is it worth going to White Sands at the end of September? Or should I go to the eastern side of the atoll. If the answer is yes, can anybody recommend a good ireland on the eastern side with a reliable diving center.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Sel

Maldives is certainly a great place to go on your honeymoon. I was there for my 10th wedding anniversary and it felt like I was on my honeymon. It was paradise. I didn’t want to return home.

There are almost 100 resort islands in the Maldives, each has it’s own unique qualities, so you have to pick and choose. Generally the ones that are closet to the outer edge of the Atoll are better for diving, as they have deep walls and more large fish i.e. whale sharks, mantas etc. You really need to look at each island and get a feel for them to see if them suit your diving requirements and have a sufficient romantic atmosphere for your honeymoon.

Off the top of my head some of the famous diver islands are Bandos (it also had a reputation for partying as well), Helengli (but in my opinion the bungalows are not nice enough if you’re on your honey moon. It’s purely a diver island) Ellhaido in Ari Atoll (great diving, cute rooms with outdoor bath, but a wall around the island to prevent beach erosion, which disturbs the romantic sunset views and that paradise feeling, Kuramathi Spa & Resort in Radsu Atoll (a huge island which offers a good dive shop, a decompressor, three resorts, mostly nice renovated rooms, several bars and restaurants and since the island is so large you can actually feel almost secluded on it. I’ve head that about other large islands as well. Very romantic indeed. On the other hand Fesdu Island in Ari Atoll is small, but you can feel secluded on it as well. It's also within reach of my favourite dive sites.

I've taken two dive holidays in Ari Atoll in Late October till mid November and although it is not quite high season it was great. There was a bit of overcast sometimes, but generally no showers and when so only very short ones. The visibility for diving was good and generally around 15 meters. This seems to be the manta migrating in this season, and if you are lucky you’ll see a few.

My favourite dive spot "maayafushi tila" localed close to the middle of Ari Atoll, if I rmember correctly. There are so many huge schools of fish you don't know where took look. The macro environment is gorgeous and packed with colours, plus there are a few huge fans. You've also have sharks, turtles, eels, octopus and generally speaking fish everywhere you look. Another thing I like about the spot it that the top of the Tila a.k.a. brombie or pinnacle is roughly 5 or 6 meters so you can stay there and watch the octopus and small fish while doing your safety stop.

Other popular dive spots in the area are "coral gardens" and "fish head", “Ellaidhoo” house reef, as well as a few wrecks. Radsu Atoll, just North of Ari Atoll is famous for it’s hammer head sharks. I can’t speak for the other atolls because I’ve only been to Radsu Atoll and Ari Atoll as well as Male itself.

Aside from the other recommendations you’re received, I recommend the following sites to get a feel for the Maldives:

http://www.malediven.at (one of my favourite sites in English & German with panoramic photos etc)
http://www.hellomaldives.com/maldives/
http://www.maldive.com/
http://www.malediven.com/malediven/
http://www.malediven.net/haupts.htm (in German)
http://www.visitmaldives.com/maldives/index.html (official web site from the office of tourism)

Have a great honeymoon.

Sylvie

Agreed with Sylvie!! Maayafushi Tila is one of my favorite dive spots in the world... But sshhhh, we don't want it to be too popular
