My husband and I have just returned from our trip to Puerto Morelos, Mexico, located about 40 minutes drive south of Cancun. Puerto Morelos is a small town that's not developed the way Cancun or Playa de Carmen are. I booked 2 days of diving with a dive shop called "Aquanauts" -- a family run operation consisting of a husband and team William and Crescent, as well as brother Tony. Because September is the low tourist season, on both days of my dive there was only one other guest besides myself -- which if fine by me. What joy my dives have been with Aquanauts (I highly recommend them to anyone who plan to dive in Puerto Morelos).

Since I am acquainting myself with my new u/w camera, I asked for shallow dives. William took me to the mini-wall at the Marine Park for the first dive and the Lobster Reef for the 2nd tank. On both days, the surface air temperature was 96F and the water temperature was 88F -- kinda like diving in warm bath water -- with visibility between 60- 80ft. The other guest during the first day of diving was Bruno, a nice guy who was going through his Master Diver open water training. For that dive, the owner and dive master, William, chose an open spot to work with Bruno but where reefs wrapped the area further back, offering plenty of sea lives for me to take pictures and videos to my heart's content.

The spot we went to for my second day of diving is not a marine park, but we were told to treat it with the same respect. The area is called the Aquarium (need more be said?), and the Paradise Reef for the 2nd tank. These spots are so choked with sea lives that after trying to take a couple of pictures, I switched to video and kept it in that mode as I kicked along in a steady and easy pace -- as William had commanded. In a few occassions, I had to hover above the thick school of fishes as they swam along the reef, streaming silently as one thick glob of bright colorful gel. As a new diver, the visual of these two days of diving is mind-boggling!
