I was born, raised, and currently live in Vancouver.

6 Months ago I started diving and I love it.

I was just offered and accepted a job in Kapuskaing Ontario (170km north of Timmins).

I have never been to the area before... what is the diving like?

I know I have to travel to get to some good diving. So how far away? What are some good dive shops or charters in the area?

All I know is... I need a drysuit! :D

Man, is that far north! Don't know much about diving up there, but there's lots of lakes, so I'm sure there's opportunity. Just got to figure out where. It's about 700km to drive to Tobermory. About 400km to drive to Wawa, which is on the shores of Lake Superior.

response if you ask in Ontario Freaks section - may be we can ask one of the moderators to move your post there.

I looked up where that place Kapuskaing is - by the looks of it, you'd be within 3-4 hours of driving to what i personally consider the best diving on the Great Lakes - Straits of Mackinac and Lake Superior Preserves

I know that there are few people from Sault Ste. Marie on this Board

You'll have fun - and yes, you will need drysuit

I have couple of albums from the Straits in my album (go to my profile and click the link)

I hope the money's worth it, cause you'll be committing suicide before Spring!

Not for a million bucks.

When you're within 400km of Wawa, there's a serious problem.

Hey Dennis,

Kapuskasing....I'm sure you'll find somewhere to dive!? Make sure to have the following supplies:

1. Drysuit!!
2. Shotgun...for the bears
3. Drill..for the ice
4. Hummer to get to a dive site...

Just kidding (except for the drysuit, shotgun and drill!!!). You may have to travel a bit (ie. 7 to 10 hours) to get to some "popular" dive sites. I'm not even sure if there is a dive shop in your vecinity. Kapuskasing is UP NORTH...even for us Canadians. You're dive season will not be as long as what you're used to (unless you ice dive). Nonetheless, you will have access to untouched wildlife. Make sure you're prepared before diving because help will most likely be far away. On the other hand, Northern Ontario is one of best places to live in the world if you enjoy the great outdoors!Have fun.

One of our former store staff and a great PADI instructor lives in the Kap.
Private email me and I'll give you her name and phone number up there.

There are plenty of lakes, but their idea of a wreck dive is a sunken snowmobile.

Thought this would be considered a recovery dive? Or necessary to be able to drive home instead of walking? ;-)

Marvintpa once bubbled...
