Scuba diving in Norway put some demand on your experience with cold waters. In the summer you may be ok with a good wetsuit or semidry, but most of us use drysuit all year round. Personally i consider buying a semi for summer use, because it's more convenient when the surface temps are warm. The best diving is within the cooler period of september through may though. We can have very clear water and our marine life is nothing behind what you find in the tropics. Just different! I personally find our marine life the most fascinating.

Besides, we have no sharks. -Just plenty of whales! :11:

I would like to share with you some of our experiences from the island Hitra, just outside the Trondheimsfiord in Norway. We visit this island regularly and we have put some stuff from a few of these trips in our personal website.

Her are the links:

Looking at your post, site and pix, it seems your diving isn't so much different than here in Alaska :D

Like you, we have pretty fantastic viz in winter with variable plankton blooms in the summer.

I suppose it isn't very much different from Alaska, although we have much warmer water in the summer I suppose. Temps now in February was 40F+ (6-7 Celsius) in the water and 30-35F in the air. This is ok with us, especially since we had the hot tubs and saunas ready for us as we came in with the boats! But really, we didn't get very cold.

Right now Mona & I are considering to do some diving in our local lake here in the inland of Norway. -If the ice doesn't close in totally... The water temperature is just about 33-34F in the surface. But what's more difficult is the air temps at around 20F. 20F BELOW ZERO that is!!! -And, it's freshwater, with all the trouble around that. But down at 30 feet or more it's comfy 38 degrees  Better not have claustrofobia, since we do nightdives!

Enough of the scary talk. If anyone should end up in Norway for any reason, we have fabolous diving to offer. It's not cold, unless you are from California. And it's self serve!

Well, maybe you would be surprised but here in Croatia at Adriatic sea we have similar temperatures in this time of year. This year we had snow two times at the sea side and the islands. Last weekend the sea was 8-9 Celsius and the air temperature was 3-5. However, the diving was great but the water was not so clear. Generaly, the water is colder and less clear in the northern Adriatic and warmer and more clear in the southern.

Winter sea temperatures: North 6-9, South 10-14
Summer sea temperatures, both North & South: up to 25 at surface and 18-22 deeper than 20m

A bit surprised you have such cool watertemps in the winter! However, as of right now the temperature outside my window is minus 23 degrees Celsius

We're going diving on sunday!

Today is little bit warmer but yesterday morning it was minus 17. I think I'll skip diving this weekend - I promised kids some skiing.

I've been there 17 years ago... (gee so long ago). It's a beautiful place. Pity I wasn't diving at that time:(

As the temp - Monkseal - so it seems I have a bit warmer than you. Last night it was ONLY -14 Centigrades :D

I'm fed up with this winter.
As for me - it's way too cold to dive as we don't have saunas around our lakes to warm up. So I'll stick to my pool sessions twice a week.

Hey! Here's Ole's album from this trip: http://home.online.no/~mo-5/places/hitra/hitra0205/ole_reidars_bilder.htm

Each photographer on each of our trips gets his og her own photo album on our website. That way all participants can enjoy everyone's pictures, and have a "personal" memory trip even if they don't have a camera of their own.

There's another trip coming up this october (14. - 20.) and we've set up a bus from Oslo also for convenient transportation. Consider it for your autumn holidays! :blinking:

Here's info on that trip: http://www.turut.no/dykk_eng.htm

(And thanks for your great photos Ole Reidar! :D )
