I don't know if this is the right place to post this or not. I am in winstead Minnesota visiting realitives. This is my first time here and noticed there are a lot of lakes here and wondered if there are any divers in the area. I am only here for a short stay this time but will be back and would like to dive one of these lakes if possible.

You are about 20 miles from my daughter, but she doesn't dive. (Too many of her mother's genes I guess.)

I froze my rear off diving there in June, you must be much younger than me to try it in April! ;-)

Ok, I am addicted, I would try it there in April. I did find lake diving interesting.

Yes, lots of lakes, but, only a handfull used with any frequency. A lake most divers cut their teeth on is Square lake. Others in no particular order are Perch in Wisconsin, the mines up in Crosby-Ironton and by Gilbert. Lake Superior, Minnetonka, Mille lacs and some Minneapolis lakes. Another Wisconsin lake is Wazee.

IMHO, it's best if you dive dry. I dove one weekend in a full 7mm at Crosby and was miserably frozen to the bone.

Having said that, there are plenty of people who do it anyway.

Square Lake has an underwater water park of sorts with platforms and some items of interest and they do have changing rooms that at east keep you out of the wind if it is blowing. Viz is also not bad my MN lake standards.

The last time I dove there it was snowing and the wund was blowing across the lake at about 20 kts. It's sometimes a lot warmer in the water than out of the water.

Lake Wazee is east of Black River Falls WI - a 2-3 hour drive from the twin city area. Viz is generally good but it is a 300 ft deep flooded open pit mine so the water temp tends to stay very cold at depth all year long. You can have 60-70 degree water at 30 ft and have 35 degree water at 100-150ft.
