Hi -
I am interested in a dive trip to Costa Rica and looking at Cano Island and Manuel Antonio. Who has been there? What can you tell me about the diving?

Thanks!
Michelle

We did a family trip to Costa Rica last December, with one day of diving planned for the last day. I did 4 dives out of Tamarindo; two tanks at the Catalinas and two at Cabo Velas (edge of Tamarindo bay.) Should you end up staying in Tamarindo I can give a very positive review the AguaRica dive op (www.aguarica.net).

I've been to Cano Island. Don't expect anything like the Caribbean. There won't be the corals or big sponges. What you will see it lots of pelagics and sharks. I dove with Mad About Diving and couldn't have been happier. It's a husband and wife team. She is very responsive on email.

The one thing that really sticks out in my mind was the changes in temp. On the second dive, there was a definite thermocline that would take your breath away. Still, my rash guard was still enough to keep me warm for the rest of the dive. On the first dive, it was just plain weird. It was like thermal currents. I could actually see the heat eddies in the water.

Here are a couple videos from those dives:

Oh! And I think it's much better to drive to Uvita for an hour than to take what might be a brutal boat ride from Manuel Antonio. I'm glad that's what we did.

We dove Catalina off of Flamingo...my avatar was taken there...for me, two-four dives was enough...not much to see other than the wildlife:)
