For all of you rugged, western, California divers like my self: do you usually dive off of a boat here, or from the beach?

I didnt vote cause i use both.If i have the money ill do a boat dive.If im out for a cheap day of diving ill beach dive. Both are great.Boat diving is way less strenuous than beach diving for me.But if i cant get a boat im more than happy to do a beach dive any day.Just means i sleep better that night.

Honestly, I prefer boat diving - no long flights of stairs to hike in full gear, no sand to clean out of gear, - but I will beach dive from time to time, particularly if I am desperate to get in the water.

I also do both and other than hassling with the parking and the steps in Laguna, haven't found a beach dive I didn't like. Mainly though Casino Point and westend or backside of Catalina off the boats.

Most of my dives are beach dives.

Boat dives are great for all of the reasons mentioned on previous posts. But, I would not be able to dive as often as I would like, if I limited myself to boat dives. Beach dive's are convenient, because I can do an early Saturday morning dive and still have the afternoon open to do other things. Also, beach dives don't cost anything (except parking).

I prefer boat diving in Monterey, shore diving is fine if you stick to Breakwater or Macabee. However if you venture over to Lover's Point (cove 3) or Monastery Beach it can be quite a chore getting in and out of the water through the surf.

I really love shore diving. I enjoy the peace and solitude one (at least me :) finds from long surface swims. I've never liked the hustle and bustle of dive boats... It's also very satisfying to know you're getting to and from the dive site on your own will power. My favorite diving is found in Point Lobos and Monastary Beach in Carmel. I really enjoy swimming to the Outer Reef or Cannery Point Pinnacles in Point Lobos and am determined to swim around to Blue Fish Cove someday. One of the other ultra cool things about shore diving at Point Lobos is having the fun-loving harbor seals join you in your swim out and descent.

I do both beach dives and boat dives. I prefer boat dives, because you have access to more places within a short period of time, and it's only one big step to deeper dives. Casino Point, in Catalina, offers a very nice beach dive, IMO. SoCal, are you referring to the Shaw's Cove Marathon? Those Laguna steps seem to go uphill in both directions. The dive is worth the effort, though.
