Hi Guys,

Well be on holiday in Australia for 2 weeks in December (leaving the cold here in London for some sea & sun). Will be spending most of out time in Brisbane & Gold Coast visiting family.
We would really like to do some diving while we’re there – any suggestions on dive sites & dive operators in the area would be much appreciated. Sadly liveaboard is not an option – not seen the family for a few years, so my wife will not let me ditch the in laws for a few days…

Thanks,
Adriaan

:happywave

if you can sneak out 3 days (its ONLY 3 days!), i would suggest a 3 day liveaboard on the Big Cat Reality / Dive Tours of Moreton Bay they dive morton bay and hubby really liked these guys (i dont do boats)

otherwise take the family for a day outting to Nth Stradbroke Island, they can play on the beach while you do some diving. its aboot 30mins by car from brissy airport and then a 30min ferry ride (you cant take your car but will have to book a spot) to the island, maybe the dive shop can help you with logisitics if you phone them. Manta Lodge and Scuba Centre : Stradbroke Island

otherwise, go NORTH and dive HMAS Brisbane, Scuba World | Dive HMAS Brisbane | Shark Dives | Learn to Dive | Scuba Equipment, its about one hour north from brisbane and i doubt you will be disappointed

otherwise maybe the blackwell family at Dive Dive Dive: Generic Page might be able to help you out (about 20mins from brisbane central)

cheers and goodluck!

I regularly dive with Nautilus on their trips to Flinders reef which is my favourite dive site around Brisbane Nautilus Scuba Centre | Learn to Scuba Dive, Brisbane Diving and Snorkelling trips They go every Saturday and Sunday.

Cook Island is probably the best diving off the Gold Coast, you can go with Allways diving amongst others AllWays Diving Brisbane for Scuba Diving Equipment and Dive Training Courses

Also consider going to Byron Bay, about 2 hours drive from Brisbane, closer to the Gold Coast (a lot of Gold Coast based divers seem to go down to Byron Bay rather than diving at the Gold Coast). Very nice diving there, I recommend Sundive. Dive Australia Scuba Diving with Sun Dive Byron Bay

Thanks alot for the info guys!!!

Hi there Steen -

I've just moved to Brisbane and will be checking out the local dive scene once unpacked - please feel free to PM me closer to your departure date for the gossip. From what little I've done in the area so far I fully agree with Keith - Byron is a great dive spot and only a short hop south of where you will be.

Have you considered dumping your in-laws at a casino/bottle shop/mental hospital/correctional facility for a few days and sneaking a liveaboard in? I know that’s what I would do if I was in your position... :D

My wife and I won't be diving for a week or so but if there’s any Brisbane-based scubaboard members keen for a splash and a beer then feel free to drop me a line.

Cheers,
Rohan.

My one and only trip to Australia had several days of diving on Julian Rocks in Byron Bay. I loved it -- and so did my wife.

Her write up is here

Thanks Rohan, I'll be in touch in a few weeks, to hear the latest goss...
Can't wait to leave this crappy weather in London behind and get some sun in my face!

Not wishing to hijack the thread but I will be watching with interest for what you decide to do Adriaan. We are doing the same but in August...... visiting relatives and a wedding at Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast. We are looking to get away though to an island for a weeks holiday. Maybe take the Sunlander up to Cairns on the way?

Like to stay on the island (which one????) and snorkle and dive from there rather than doing a liveaboard. My wife and son suffer sea sickness and that means no liveaboards......daytrips only.

Any recommendations anyone? Thinking of Lizard Island or Lady Elliot at the moment.

Thanks
Greg

No worries Greg, I'll let you know when we get back in January, might post a trip report with a few pic's.

Cheers,
Adriaan

I am planning to visit Gold Coast by end of April 2008. We will be staying at Broadbeach. Please recommend good dive-center and also dive/snorkeling sites nearby. Thanks.
